JINS MEME smart eyewear can monitor eye movement, body motion

JINS MEME smart eyewear

Japanese eyewear designer JINS is looking to add some brains to its products. To that end, they have developed a smart pair of spectacles called the JINS MEME, which look sexy right from the get-go; unlike Google Glass that are often polarizing, to say the least.

The prototype device integrates a few sensors, including a gyroscope and accelerometer to sense movement and body position, along with three-point electrooculography (EOG) sensors which measure voltage potentials between the front and back of the eye and are used to record eye movement and aid in the diagnosis of various ophthalmological diseases.

JINS is holding a developer competition to create mobile apps that will make JINS MEME useful. The JINS MEME is still not ready for prime time though, and is currently more of an R&D platform with a number of possible applications. The motion sensors could naturally be used as fitness tracker, while the gyroscope could help monitor and correct body posture. The EOG sensors on their end could help detect if drivers are getting fatigued by analyzing blinking rate and eye movement; or could help monitor the onset of vision problems and eye diseases, and even neurological diseases that can affect the eyes.

To gather early interest, JINS is holding a developer competition to create mobile apps that will make JINS MEME useful. Academic researchers from all around the world are invited to participate and are invited to reserve an academic pack that will be shipping in late-April.

As for the rest of the world, JINS only said that it plans to open a U.S. store in San Francisco later this year. No dates have been revealed and we’ll have to wait a little longer to get that and other details. Stay tuned…
