D-EYE portable retinal imaging system now available for 395 EUR

D-EYE

The D-EYE portable retinal imaging system is now shipping, the company has announced. The affordable retinal examiner is a phone-case-sized add-on that turns an iPhone (5/5S) or Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5 into a fundus camera capable of taking high-def images and video of the eye for health screening and evaluation. The device is available through Wilson Ophthalmic or direct from D-EYE’s website for 395 EUR.

Designed by Dr. Andrea Russo, an ophthalmologist and a Ph.D.-candidate researcher at the University of Brescia, Italy, the FDA-registered system can be used to identify a number of eye health conditions, including the leading causes of blindness such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

D-EYE offers an up to 20-degree field of view for easy observations, including the optic nerve, without any disturbing corneal glare.“D-EYE’s telemedicine applications will transcend traditional spatial boundaries, allowing specialists worldwide to assist and collaborate on diagnoses, which is especially impactful in areas where resources are limited or when patients are unable to travel,” said D-EYE CEO Richard Sill, whom we’ve interviewed recently.

D-EYE offers an up to 20-degree field of view for easy observations, including the optic nerve, without any disturbing corneal glare. It can be used in any setting, while its ergonomic design makes it particularly beneficial for use with children, bedridden patients, and even animals.

The companion app provides step-by-step instructions, contains a glossary of conditions of the eye, archives all examinations performed on patients, and allows the examiner to email or upload images for review by appropriately trained medical specialists. On top of that, D-EYE’s HIPAA-compliant ImageVault service — available later this year — will offer a subscription-based cloud platform to enable storing and sharing images among medical professionals, promoting telemedicine applications.
