Masimo’s finger pulse oximeter MightySat can now measure breath rate

MightySat

Masimo has updated its FDA-cleared MightySat fingertip pulse oximeter with the ability to measure respiration rate from the pleth (RRp), in addition to arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse rate (PR), perfusion index (PI), and Plethysmograph Variability Index (PVI).

Measuring respiration rate, or the number of breaths per minute, typically requires manual counting of breaths with a timer and then multiplying to convert to a per minute rate. And this is why this parameter is infrequently measured outside of healthcare settings.

MightySat features hospital-grade Signal Extraction Technology (SET) pulse oximetry and also provides parameters not available on other fingertip pulse oximeters, such as RRp and PVI. In addition, the device connects via Bluetooth to the Masimo Personal Health and Apple Health app to track, trend, and communicate measurements.

“We believe the MightySat will help transform the wearables market by providing fitness enthusiasts with the same valuable personal data that to date has only been available to elite athletes,” Joe Kiani, Chairman and CEO of Masimo, said in a statement.

MightySat is available for purchase on Amazon U.S. and Amazon U.K. The model with Respiration Rate will be available for purchase by the end of February 2016.
