Amazon launches nationwide weight-loss program with GLP-1 drugs

Amazon is expanding deeper into healthcare with a new program that makes popular weight-loss drugs more accessible to patients across the United States. The move puts the retail giant in direct competition with specialized telehealth companies and traditional pharmacies in the fast-growing GLP-1 medication market.

The company announced its “comprehensive GLP-1 Management Program” through Amazon One Medical on April 21. The service integrates treatment into routine primary care visits, where doctors can monitor how weight loss affects patients’ heart health, diabetes risk, and overall condition. This approach differs from many online-only services that offer quick consultations focused solely on prescribing weight-loss drugs.

How Amazon’s program works

Amazon One Medical locations across all 50 states now offer the program. Patients meet with healthcare providers who can prescribe both injectable and oral GLP-1 medications as part of their regular care.

Once prescribed, medications come through Amazon Pharmacy with upfront pricing and delivery options. The company promises same-day delivery in nearly 3,000 cities and towns, with plans to reach about 4,500 locations by year-end.

Pricing breaks down by insurance status

Amazon’s pricing structure aims to address one of the biggest barriers to GLP-1 access – cost. Many insurance plans don’t cover these medications for weight loss, leaving patients with bills that can exceed $1,000 monthly.

The company’s rates are:

“By expanding access to the latest GLP-1 medications with upfront, clear pricing, we’re making it easier for customers to get the treatments their health care providers prescribe and to stay on those medications because they’re delivered reliably directly to patients,” said Tanvi Patel, vice president and general manager of Amazon Pharmacy.

Understanding GLP-1 medications

GLP-1 drugs were originally developed to help people with Type 2 diabetes control blood sugar. The same medications, often in different doses, are now widely prescribed for weight loss.

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your body naturally produces to regulate metabolism. These medications work by:

Patients typically experience fewer blood sugar spikes, reduced appetite, and longer-lasting feelings of fullness after eating. This combination often leads to significant weight loss over time.

Why this matters for healthcare

Amazon’s entry into GLP-1 treatment reflects the massive demand for these medications. Popular brands like Ozempic and Wegovy have created shortages as millions of Americans seek access to effective weight-loss treatments.

The program also shows Amazon’s broader healthcare strategy. The company has been building its medical services through acquisitions like One Medical and pharmacy services. Integrating GLP-1 treatment into primary care could help Amazon compete with both traditional healthcare providers and newer telehealth companies that focus specifically on weight-loss drugs.
