Apple Watch Series 12 brings clinical-grade heart rate sensing and a readiness score to the wrist

Apple Watch has long promised to be a health device. With Series 12, it’s starting to look like one. Apple is claiming the most accurate heart rate sensing of any wearable, backed by a study across more than 1,000 participants comparing it directly against competing devices. That’s a bold claim, and clinicians will rightly want to see the full methodology. But the underlying architecture shift is real.

What’s actually new in the hardware

The Series 12 is built around a new Health Sensing System, combining redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors with Apple’s S11 chip. The result is continuous heart rate measurement every five seconds throughout the day, up from less frequent sampling in prior models. HRV is now measured up to 24 times more often, with two distinct variants: recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV for longer-term cardiovascular insight. Both are accessible in an updated Heart Rate app, and overnight vitals now includes recovery HRV benchmarked against a personal baseline.

The readiness score: useful or just another number?

New to Series 12 is a readiness score, a 0 to 10 daily rating that weighs recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep. It outputs one of four plain-language recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. Apple says the algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study, with input from exercise scientists and physicians. So there’s at least some scientific grounding here. Whether it changes behavior in meaningful ways is a different question, and one that will take real-world use to answer.

Audio Intelligence and Apple Intelligence on the wrist

Beyond health, the S11 chip powers new Audio Intelligence features arriving later this year, including conversation recall and sound awareness tools, with on-device privacy built in. Apple Intelligence also brings context-aware Siri to watchOS 27.

Battery and build

Workout battery life extends to 10 hours, 25% more than Series 11. A 15-minute charge now adds up to 12 hours of battery. The watch is available in aluminum with Ceramic Shield 2 glass, and in titanium and ceramic options. Pre-orders are open now, with availability from September 18.
