The surgical app maker DocSpera raises undisclosed amount from Life Force Ventures and Attractor Ventures

The Sunnyvale, California-based DocSpera, which makes a secure communication and collaboration platform for surgeons, has managed to secure its first institutional round funding from Life Force Ventures and Attractor Ventures. The amount of cash raised has not been revealed, but we do know the new money will be used to further develop the platform and reach out to new clients.

DocSpera has already signed up more than 1,000 surgeons across 450 institutions, including Kaiser, the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and UCSF.Founded by orthopedic surgeon and serial entrepreneur Ken Trauner, and former Yahoo executive Sy Fahimi, DocSpera has been already embraced by the medical community, having signed up more than 1,000 surgeons across 450 institutions, including Kaiser, the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and UCSF. Furthermore, the American Association of Hip and Knee Society (AAHKS) recently signed with DocSpera as its exclusive partner for case collaboration.

DocSpera’s solution makes it easy for surgeons and their care teams to discuss complex cases, determine preoperative plans and schedule surgeries, and share case information — including x-rays and videos — with a verified network of colleagues and medical device industry representatives. This exchange of information is conducted in minutes in a HIPAA-compliant format, replacing time-consuming exchange of voicemails and/or faxes.

“We’re addressing a market that affects a huge number of professionals working in a hyper-segmented environment,” said DocSpera SVP Kojo Appenteng in an interview with VentureBeat. “You can’t simply send someone a text message about a patient, because it violates HIPAA (patient confidentiality).”

Looking forward, the company wants to take advantage of the data its clients are sharing on the platform, and eventually bring the cost down while increasing efficiencies. A bold goal which seems achievable for DocSpera…
