Smart pill bottle maker AdhereTech has secured $1.75 million in its first Series A round of funding from undisclosed investors in the healthcare industry. The company will use the new cash to further scale its healthcare services, and develop second generation of its product, which is said to be smaller, cheaper and easier to mass manufacture.

AdhereTech’s patented smart pill bottle uses calls and texts to remind patients to take their medicine.AdhereTech’s patented digital pill bottle reminds patients to take their medicine. If they miss a pill, the bottle will call their phone and send a text message, as well as flash lights and make chiming noises if those other signals are ignored. A case manager may also call the patient to ask what is going on, depending whether something like that is needed or not.

Last year, the company began a pilot program with The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center involving patients receiving study medications from the hospital’s investigational pharmacy. Plans are in the works to expand that program during the summer with pharmaceutical companies and top research institutions.
