Light scanner Toothscan wants to reinvent dental hygiene

Toothscan is a new kind of medical device designed to help users maintain their dental health by acting as an early detection tool for dental problems to avoid expensive treatment bills.

The device is made to be used by both dentists and public. Although no technology can replace one’s dentist, Toothscan wants to allow users to have a better control over their and their families’ dental health.

Toothscan’s mobile app doubles as an electronic diary for tracking condition of the teeth to demonstrate personal mouth hygiene on a daily basis.Roughly the size of a regular toothbrush, the tech inside Toothscan is based on the spectroscopy technology. Said method is used to measure the frequency of light, electromagnetic or acoustic waves reflected from a surface or a substance.

“Toothscan’s emitter generates a powerful light beam which reflects from the surface of the teeth which is then detected by the receiver area,” the project’s Indiegogo page reads. “Irregular reflections are measured and interpreted by the software diagnosing areas requiring attention.”

Obtained data is then synchronised via Bluetooth to a connected PC, tablet or smartphone.

The accompanying mobile app doubles as an electronic diary for tracking condition of the teeth to demonstrate personal mouth hygiene on a daily basis. The application also communicates with server to allow periodical monitoring of teeth condition. User’s account can be accessed by a dentist — via the Toothscan Pro service — who can prescribe appropriate procedure if needed.

Additionally, the virtual dentist mobile app will remind users to clean teeth to their kids and provide daily or weekly advice; for instance if there is a need to eat more fruits and vegetables in order to restore minerals balance, like calcium.

Toothscan is looking to raise $250,000 in a crowdfunding campaign; a single device goes for $149.
