Runtastic has teamed-up with Oculus Rift to develop a proof-of-concept software that brings indoor exercise to the VR space.
The application, which is not readily available for the general public, allows the user to do a 7-minute workout in a VR environment. The software supports squats, lunges, yoga as well as the official 7-Minute Workout, which can be conducted in virtual environments such as a scenic hillside, a villa by the beach, and a virtual black hole. Yes, the two companies want to benefit from all the buzz Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster is generating.
Virtual in-app trainers also come included, performing exercises for the benefit of the user, using motion capture generated by Runtastic’s professional trainers.
The entire package is still in the prototype phase and will be first unveiled to the larger public at the upcoming CES in Las Vegas. Going forward, Runtastic plans to offer customizable surroundings, and eventually make the software available to the wider audience. Perhaps they end-up supporting projects like Google Cardboard or Samsung’s Gear VR? We’re hoping to get all the answers in the next weeks. Stay tuned in the meantime…
