Intel acquires maker of Recon Jet smartglasses

Vancouver-based Recon Instruments has been acquired by Intel, marking the chip giant’s second acquisition of a wearable tech maker. In March 2014, Intel bought smartwatch developer Basis for around $100 million. Terms of this latest deal have not been disclosed.

Recon makes the Recon Jet smartglasses, and has previously co-operated with Intel, having received funding from its venture arm, Intel Capital.

Recon will stay in its offices in Vancouver, Canada and will get to keep all of its employees, as well as the brand. With Recon on its side, Intel gets “a talented, experienced wearable computing team that will help us expand the market for head mounted display products and technologies,” according to Josh Walden, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s New Technology Group.

Dan Eisenhardt, Recon’s co-founder and CEO, was similarly excited about the deal, adding that as part of a bigger organization, Recon gets access to vast resources that would help it keep growing.

“As part of Intel, we’ll have the resources to continue the mission we began with the creation of Recon in 2008, but with a level of efficacy and speed that’s beyond the reach of a pioneer in a new market,” he said.

Recon will stay in its offices in Vancouver, Canada and will get to keep all of its employees, as well as the brand.

Neither Intel nor Recon explicitly said that they’ll be pursuing opportunities in the digital health market, but something tells us that is going to happen at some point in the future. We’ll make sure to spill all the details the second we get ’em. Stay tuned in the meantime.
