Hospitals are embracing mobile technology as attested by a recent survey involving 741 representatives from 2,213 hospitals in the US. The annual Most Wired hospitals report, which includes metrics on health IT adoption, has found that some 63% of hospitals on the list have reached a certain level of IT adoption, and are offering patients self-management tools for chronic conditions.
The survey also found that 89% of Most Wired hospitals offer access to the patient portal through a mobile app, up from last year’s 58 percent. The situation is similar when we take a look at all hospitals, 79% of which offered access to the patient portal through the app, up from 47% in 2014.
Many (63%) of the Most Wired hospitals offered secure messaging (up from 40% last year), and 50% have an app for patients’ personal health records (up from 32% in 2014). Moreover, around 67% have the option to incorporate patient-generated data into their patient portal, and 60% offer patient education in multiple languages via the patient portal.
The survey was sponsored by VMware, and conducted in partnership with the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). It was fielded between January and March of this year.
