Under Armour acquires group workout finder app Gritness

Gritness app

Under Armour (UA) is continuing its acquisition spree with Gritness, a recent member of the StartUp Health accelerator which helps people find and join workouts, hence the name GRoup fITNESS. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

While UA’s previous acquisitions — including MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal and Endomondo — had a lot to do with these services’ large user base, this one likely has something to do with people employed by Gritness. The company was founded in 2012 and has thus far raised around $300,000 in seed funding.

Under the deal, Gritness cofounder and CEO Tommy Fad will become a director of architecture and consumer engagement at Under Armour, while Jason Whitson — whom we’ve interviewed in March — will take the role of now director of engineering and consumer engagement.

The Gritness app and website allows users to search for workouts or find friends that have similar fitness interests. Also, the service enables businesses to make their available fitness programs more visible.

“Gritness was created by athletes who were fed-up with the level of effort required to get people together for a workout,” the company’s website reads. “It always started with an email chain, that quickly got off topic, followed by text messages, phone calls, and messenger pigeons. What if we could bring it all together? What if we could make it easy to find people that want to ride as fast as you, run as far as you, and lift as heavy as you? That’s what we built Gritness for.”

Gritness lists over 1.8 million activities in places all over the world. It supports 21 sports, including cycling, running, and yoga.
