Athos raises $35.5M Series C for its smart fitness apparel

Smart fitness apparel maker Athos has closed a $35.5 million Series C investment led by Social Capital. Also participating in the round were apparel giant MAS Holdings, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Felix Capital, as well as existing investors DMC, early Fitbit investor True Ventures and angel investor Joe Lacob. The company will use the funds to expand its team and invest more in R&D.

Athos’ garments measure muscle performance using EMG (electromyography), as well as heart rate and acceleration. This data is streamed to the user’s mobile device, along with simple, actionable insights to help them reach their individual goals.

Some of the nation’s top sports performance institutes have been implementing Athos’ technology into their training programs for elite athletes and sports teams. Los Angeles-based ProActive and Fast Twitch in Miami utilize Athos in the training regimens of some of their world-class athletes, including Karl Anthony Towns, Clay Matthews and Elvis Dumervil.

Started in 2012 by co-founders Dhananja Jayalath, Christopher Wiebe and Chamath Palihapitiya, Athos was born from an advanced engineering project at the University of Waterloo.
