The next generation of wearable devices may not be worn but painted on one’s body, appearing almost like a tattoo. This, according to Austin-based software design and development firm Chaotic Moon, is the only way people will actually “wear” their devices, instead of dumping them after just a few weeks. Said company has put together different components and conductive paint to create a circuitry system called Tech Tatts, which can monitor health and biometric data from the skin.
“This is the new wearable,” Chaotic Moon CEO Ben Lamm told TechCrunch. “The future of wearables is biowearables. This is not something that can be easily removed like a Fitbit. It can be underneath a flack jacket, directly on the skin to be collecting this data and being reported back.”
The technology works like a temporary tattoo and can be easily washed off.Lamm added that this technology works like a temporary tattoo and can be easily washed off. Nevertheless, we can see many folks freaking out and instead opting for “good ol'” Fitbit, or some similar wrist-band.
Beyond healthcare organizations, Chaotic Moon will also be pitching its technology to Pentagon, which could use it to check on the vitals of soldiers on the ground, as well as to, say, detect poisons in the air and/or pathogens in a soldier’s body. Another use case for these tech tattoos sees them being used as tracking devices, enabling parents to watch on their kids when they are in an amusement park or other highly populated areas.
Lamm added that this is an “eco-friendly, non-invasive” product that turns its users into a “human circuit board.” Not sure everyone will like how that sounds, though.
