California-based Nixon launched a “sporty” Android Wear smartwatch catered towards surfers, skiers and snowboarders.
The super-rugged, round-faced device — called Mission — features a tough body made from polycarbonate and stainless steel, as well as a multi-color AMOLED display that’s protected by Gorilla Glass. This combination makes sure the watch has a water-resistance rating of 100 meters (330 feet) which, according to Nixon, is the highest waterproof rating of any smartwatch on the market. Yes, that includes Casio’s Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10, which is water-resistant up to 50 meters.
Mission runs on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform that is 30% smaller and uses 25% less power than its predecessor.Perhaps more important is the fact that Mission runs on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform that is 30 percent smaller and uses 25 percent less power than its predecessor. Nixon, however, failed to mention any details regarding the battery life of its latest smartwatch.
Beyond basic Android Wear apps, users will also get a few sport-specific apps such as Surfline, Snocountry and Trace, which should provide users with right tools to measure their activities.
Before Mission, the company released the $300 Ultratide watch which too was able to connect to smartphones via Bluetooth. That model doesn’t run on Android Wear, though.
Nixon Mission is expected to ship later this year; price will be revealed at a later date.
