Sixty-five percent of patients now use AI to start their healthcare journey, according to Zocdoc’s 2026 AI-Informed Patient report. That’s a striking number. But using AI to research symptoms is not the same as seeing a doctor, and until now, the gap between those two things has been wide enough to lose patients entirely.
Zocdoc is addressing that gap directly. The company has announced a partnership with Google to bring real-time, agentic appointment booking into the Google Gemini app. The idea is simple: a patient asks Gemini a health question, gets useful information, and then books an appointment with a local, in-network provider without switching platforms or starting the search over. One connected experience, beginning to end.
Why the drop-off problem matters
Consider what typically happens today. A patient moves to a new city and needs a primary care physician. They ask an AI assistant for help and get solid information about preventive care, insurance coverage, and what to bring to a new patient visit. Then they need to actually find a doctor. That means opening a new tab, checking their insurer’s directory, cross-referencing availability, and hoping the practice is still accepting new patients by the time they call. Many people simply don’t complete that sequence. The friction is real, and it costs both patients and providers.
Zocdoc’s own survey found that 85% of providers report seeing patients who used AI before their visit to understand their symptoms. AI has already changed how people prepare for care. This integration is designed to change how they access it.
What the integration actually does
Through the Gemini app, patients can now search for available appointments with in-network providers and book directly, with no additional steps outside the platform. For providers already on Zocdoc, there is nothing extra to set up. If they have appointment availability listed, they are automatically bookable through Gemini.
That matters because discoverability is shifting. Traditional search engine optimization and insurance directory listings are no longer enough on their own. As AI becomes a primary starting point for health decisions, providers who are only visible in conventional channels will be harder to find by patients who never open a browser tab.
What providers should pay attention to
Zocdoc’s survey data adds some weight to the strategic case here. Sixty-two percent of providers said patients should use AI to figure out what kind of specialist to see. And 23% of patients said they want to use both AI and their clinician together to manage their health. So this isn’t a story about AI replacing clinical judgment. It’s about AI reducing the logistical friction that stops people from accessing care at all.
For practices, the practical implications break down like this:

- Patients booking through the Gemini integration are captured at high intent, when they have already decided to seek care

The bigger picture
This partnership is an early but concrete example of what agentic AI looks like in healthcare. Not a chatbot answering questions, but a system that completes an action on behalf of a user. The technology has been discussed in broad terms for a couple of years now. Zocdoc and Google are putting a specific, clinically relevant version of it into production.
Whether this kind of integration improves care access at scale will depend on how many patients actually use it and whether the appointments booked through it convert into attended visits. But the direction is clear. The front door to healthcare is moving, and it’s worth knowing where it’s going.
