Y Combinator-backed Akido Labs wants to make it easier for app developers to make solutions that tune into hospitals’ health record systems. Instead of ensuring that each hospital is ready to connect with an app, developers using Akido’s solution will connect to a single API that will handle communication with different systems used by different hospitals.
In other words, Akido Labs provides the “technical plumbing” for health IT apps. It works with each individual hospital to build a standardized API layer around each system so developers don’t have to.
“We get to know the hospital systems and can work with CIOs to get things up and running for the vendors,” Prashant Samant, one of Akido’s founders said.
The hope is that with easier integration more developers will use the platform, with Akido getting the cut — or a fixed fee — from all those API calls.
Right now, the company has a commitment from over 200 hospitals throughout the U.S., with several hundred more in the works.
Companies enabling connectivity with different systems like Akido Labs and Validic are in great position to benefit from the impeding mHealth revolution. They also happen to be likely acquisition targets for giants like Qualcomm, Google and Microsoft; but that’s another story…
