Worn on the head, the device has seven sensors that can detect five bands of brainwave activity: delta waves (most present during sleep), theta waves (associated with sleep and deep relaxation), alpha waves (indicate the user is relaxed), beta waves (present when the user is actively thinking or problem-solving), and gamma waves (occur when user is involved in higher mental activity).
Muse works in tandem with an app called Calm, which guides users through focused attention training exercises, helping users decrease stress and anxiety while improving focus.
InteraXon’s device is available for $299 on the company’s website, or at Best Buy, Bloomingdales, Amazon and Gaiam.
The company previously raised $7.2 million in two rounds from Horizon, OMERS Ventures, Ashton Kutcher’s fund A-Grade, Felicis Ventures, and ff Venture Capital, according to TechCrunch. In December 2013, InteraXon raised $287,000 on crowdfunding website Indiegogo offering Muse for $200.
