Cancer operation streamed with Google Glass

A surgeon at The Royal London Hospital removed a tumor from the liver and bowel of a 78-year-old man in the world’s first operation streamed live online with a pair of Google Glasses.

Mr Shafi Ahmed, Colorectal Cancer Lead at Barts Health NHS Trust, used the Glass to broadcast the operation to 13,000 surgical students around the globe. Students were able to interact by sending in their questions directly to surgeon who saw these appearing on the bottom left-hand side of the Google Glass. Mr Ahmed was then able to answer these questions verbally.

Following the surgery, students were asked whether they wanted this type of learning to be part of the curriculum, and unsurprisingly – 90% of them responded they do like the idea.
