CareMessage has managed to raise another $2.3 million, this time from Google.org, bringing the nonprofit’s total funding to date to around $6 million.

Google.org is the search giant’s division of that helps entrepreneurs “use technology to test out new solutions to big problems,” according to the organization’s director Jacquelline Fuller. “There are a number of SMS-for-health care apps out there, but none of them is as attuned to the needs of low-income neighbors as CareMessage,” she added.

Instead of video, San Francisco-based CareMessage relies on the “good ol'” SMS to keep users in tune with health. Using this “old technology” helps CareMessage reach a wider audience of users.

CareMessage has developed a load of custom content about some of the most costly health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The service connects medical providers and patients with SMS, sending them things like appointment reminders, personalized information about their health problems, and reminders to check their glucose levels. Previously, the organization raised funds from the Pershing Square Foundation, and more than two dozen institutional and individual donors.
