Montblanc unveils smart bracelet for current premium watches

Can an old dog learn a new trick? Montblanc hopes that’s the case having unveiled a smart bracelet designed to compliment rather than replace current premium watches.

The new band, part of the Montblanc Timewalker Urban Speed collection, comes with a little metal screen that can receive notifications and messages, while its internal hardware can keep up with users’ whereabouts, track steps and exercise.

Montblanc’s $300 smart band is available in a few color and size options.Other than those classic (for a smart band) features, there are also fancy accents worth the Montblanc name, including a high-end leather strap that has a carbon fiber texture to it that Montblanc calls “Extreme Montblanc Leather” and is produced by in Florence, Italy. At the bottom, sitting under the wrist is an electronic module made from DLC (diamond like carbon) coated steel or in gray steel.

There are a few color and size options to choose from for anyone willing to pour out $300 for a luxury smart band.

We would expect other watch makers to come up with something similar but we’re not sure how consumers will react at the end – whether they’ll keep using their traditional watches with attachments like these or they’ll replace them with smart watches such as the Apple Watch or those running Android Wear. We’ll see…
