Gymsurfing

fitmob has acquired Gymsurfing, a mobile platform for on-demand gym access, allowing the company [fitmob] to add new gyms to its portfolio of “All You Can Sweat” Passport partners across 20 different markets in the U.S. and Canada. Gymsurfing currently counts some 200 partner gyms, most of which will be integrated onto the fitmob platform over the course of the next few weeks. Financial terms of the transaction are not being disclosed, but Gymsurfing founders Kevin Bracken and Dustin Hoffman are joining the fitmob team as Director of Gym Partnerships and as a Maker (developer) respectively.

The Gymsurfing app will remain online for users looking for gym passes while traveling. The acquisition is described as a “strategic next step” for fitmob as it continues leveraging technology to connect gyms and studios with a steady stream of users looking for new and interesting workouts.

“Our goal is to become the fundamental tool that connects the supply and demand of the fitness industry like Lyft & Uber have for transportation or Yelp has for businesses,” began Raj Kapoor CEO and co-founder of fitmob. “With our portfolio of studios, trainers, and now the addition of new gyms around the nation from Gymsurfing, fitmob is offering an anytime, anywhere solution that provides variety, convenience, affordability, and fun.”

Gymsurfing launched last June when founders Kevin Bracken and Dustin Hoffman wanted to create a solution for people trying to find a gym while traveling. They built relationships with top gyms in major U.S. and Canadian cities, and created a self-serve app that made it easy for gyms to join the platform, offering $5-20 single use passes through the easy-to-use iPhone and Android apps. The Gymsurfing app will remain online for users looking for gym passes while traveling.
