Ovuline, which makes apps that help women track their fertility and pregnancy, has raised $3.2 million in a new funding round led Martin Ventures, with participation from Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The Boston-based company offers two apps, Ovia Fertility and Ovia Pregnancy, which have been downloaded by more than 2 million people, who get to benefit from a feedback loop for their symptoms. Ovuline is now seeing over 1,000 pregnancies reported on a daily basis.
Ovuline plans to bring in a chief medical officer who can work with academic institutions to make use of all the health data the company has been collecting from its users. The company has integrated information from over 250 insurance companies, and can alert users when breast pumps or prenatal massages are offered by their plans. Blue Cross Blue Shield was the first insurance company to work directly with the company, and it will be providing both funding and guidance as the startup looks to partner with other insurers.
“The pregnant and trying-to-conceive population has been difficult to identify,” chief executive Paris Wallace said. “And so although a lot of insurers have amazing programs for this population, it’s been hard for them to really engage.”
The plan is to use the new funds to keep hiring, and even bring in a chief medical officer who can work with academic institutions to make use of all the health data Ovuline has been collecting from its users.
“There’s a lot of things that are told to women about their health that are not factual or based on an adequate amount of data,” Wallace said. “Being the largest data set, we really want to weigh in on that conversation. And frankly, be able to change these misconceptions.”
