Startup looking to boost blood donations in developing countries

Socialblood

A startup called Socialblood is looking to boost the number of blood donations in developing countries, where — according the World Health Organization — there are fewer than 10 donations per 1,000 members of the population. To that end it is developing the Global Blood Type Mapping Project, designed to help people find emergency blood donors among their friends and contacts.

The service is accessible through the companion mobile app, for which development the Socialblood founders are looking to raise $35,000 in a crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo.

Said application will allow users to contact their friends via text and voice calls in an emergency. Also, users will be able to record their blood donations and get notified about their next eligibility date.

On the other hand, the service would make it easier for hospitals, blood banks and other organizations to recruit and manage donors more easily.

As part of its efforts, Socialblood has teamed-up with Facebook’s Internet.org initiative, which offers free access to select Internet services to users in developing countries.

The mentioned Indiegogo campaign is accepting donations that range from $10 to $2,000. You can check it out from here.
