MSD acquires VerbalCare to improve patient-doctor communication

VerbalCare

Stoughton-based Medical Specialties Distributors (MSD) has acquired Verbal Applications, a Boston-based startup that aims to connect patients to health care providers and professionals through mobile technology.

“Through this deal, we made years of progress in a matter of hours,” said the startup’s founder and CEO Nick Dougherty, who will now be the general manager of MSD’s Verbal Applications, also known as VerbalCare, subsidiary. “MSD provides us the means to reach patients and providers on a national scale.”

MSD is a distributor of infusion-related products and biomedical equipment rentals and service into the alternate care market. The company services home care, oncology, dialysis and other markets.

On the other hand, VerbalCare — founded in 2013 — serves as bridge between patients and their caregivers that “closes the communication gap by providing a tool to improve the quality of patient care.” It has participated in the 2013 class of Boston-based accelerator program MassChallenge.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
