China’s Guahao raises $394M for its online doctor-booking platform

Guahao

Guahao — Mandarin for “take a number” — is China-based healthcare startup that offers a variety of services, including quick-booking tool that allows patients to virtually “take a number” at a hospital before actually getting there, and avoid agonizing hours of standing in the line. Moreover, the company also offers information on doctors, specialists, and procedures.

Now, Guahao is getting ready for a rapid growth, having raised $394 million in a round led by Hillhouse Capital and Goldman Sachs, with participation from Tencent, China Development Bank Capital, Fosun, and others.

Some $300 will go towards building a nationwide internet platform for diagnosis and treatment, and another $150 million to create five surgery centers in cooperation with top-end local medical companies. The company is also changing the name to the Weiyi Group to reflect its broader healthcare goals. The Guahao.com web portal will retain the Guahao branding, but its mobile app and health insurance system are now both named Weiyi.

Guahao is by no means the only company offering online/mobile booking services in China. However, with this new round of funding, it seems best positioned to take the leading role on the market…
