Planned Parenthood has launched a new app, called Spot On, that makes it easier for women to track their period and manage birth control.
The iOS app allows users to track period of their cycle, including flow, symptoms (i.e. fatigue, cramps, bloating, stomach aches, and more), activities, and moods. Also, tracking is available for birth control, providing discreet reminders, and personalized advice. This information is then synced with Apple’s HealthKit from where users can export the data at any time.
Beyond tracking, Spot On also offers information and answers to common questions such as: “Why should I track my cycle?”, “What are the different types of birth control methods?”, and “What’s a ‘normal’ period?” Plus, at any time users can easily locate nearby Planned Parenthood health centers to get the services they need.
“At Planned Parenthood, we understand that your period is a normal — if not always welcome — part of life, and we hear pretty much every question in the book about periods and birth control,” Planned Parenthood Federation of America Chief Medical Officer Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley said in a statement. “This led us to create a resource to help every person understand their own unique cycle and body.”
Before this latest effort, Planned Parenthood launched two other apps, Planned Parenthood Care and Planned Parenthood Direct. The former prescribes birth control to women via video visits, powered by American Well, and then sends them either the pill, the patch or the ring through the mail, presuming they live in Washington state or Minnesota (where this service is available). As for the latter app, it is made to help people in California order confidential STD testing kits, which arrive through the mail.
In addition to Planned Parenthood, we have two other prominent startups offering period-tracking capabilities – Clue and Glow.
