Samsung cuts the barrier to sleep coaching and expands running tiers in latest Health app update

Three days of sleep data is now enough to start a personalized coaching program, and runners get two new advanced training levels

Most people who need sleep help are also the least consistent sleepers. Samsung appears to have noticed. Its latest Samsung Health update drops the data requirement for Sleep Coaching from seven days in a month to just three days within the past two weeks, making the feature accessible to users whose sleep is too irregular to meet the old threshold.

How the sleep coaching update works

Once users have three qualifying days of sleep data, they complete a short intake survey covering sleep regularity, nighttime interruptions, caffeine and alcohol habits, and subjective sleep quality. The app then assigns a Sleep Animal profile and generates a four-to-eight-week coaching plan tied to individual goals. The program adjusts its weekly recommendations as sleep patterns change, tracking daily satisfaction scores and lifestyle inputs along the way.

The behavioral logic here is grounded in sleep science basics: consistent timing, reduced evening stimulants, morning light exposure. Users get daily habit checklists and tips such as avoiding screens an hour before bed or stretching outside after waking. It’s practical, not clinical, but the structure mirrors approaches used in digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.

Reporting also gets an update. A new pentagon-shaped Sleep Balance graph pulls together five indicators: sleep time, regularity, nighttime awake time, sleep satisfaction, and Energy Score. Morning insight messages now connect directly to weekly and final reports, giving users a cleaner through-line from last night’s data to longer-term trends.

Running Coach gets two new advanced tiers

The Running Coach feature expands from 10 to 12 training levels, with the new tiers aimed at intermediate and advanced runners who had outgrown the existing ceiling. Plans are still built from a 12-minute running test or historical data. Samsung also added a social sharing feature that exports workout data into platform-ready templates, and a Strava integration that lets users import saved routes directly into Samsung Health for running, trail running, and cycling.

Rollout and compatibility
  • Samsung Health app v6.24 or above required for sleep features
  • Sleep Coaching needs a Galaxy Watch 4 or later, Galaxy Fit3 or later, or Galaxy Ring
  • Running Coach requires Android 10 or above and Galaxy Watch 8 Series or later
  • Strava integration is not available in China, Russia, South Korea, or several other restricted markets

The update rolls out progressively from October 2026. For users managing fatigue, shift-work disruption, or early-stage sleep disorders, lower onboarding friction could meaningfully increase adoption of a tool that, used consistently, has real behavioral health value.
