PillPack has launched an iOS app with Apple Watch support that reminds users to take their medication(s). Available as a free download, PillPack – Medication Reminders promises to “eliminate the frustration of remembering to take medication.” It is also touted as the “first health app of its kind to automatically import a customer’s current medication list” regardless of which pharmacy they currently use, while relying on user’s location, activity or time to do its magic.
PillPack is a full-service pharmacy that simplifies the process of managing multiple medications through a combination of convenient packaging, technology, and personalized service. The company ships a personalized roll of pre-sorted medications, including prescriptions, vitamins, and OTC’s in individual packs, and also manages refills for customers by coordinating with physicians and insurance providers.
Touted as the “first health app of its kind to automatically import a customer’s current medication list,” PillPack – Medication Reminders works with users’ existing pharmacies.“The best solution to adherence is simplicity, and the PillPack design tackles this challenge physically with our dispenser and individual pre-sorted packs,” says TJ Parker, PharmD, CEO of PillPack. “Our goal with the app is to further simplify and re-imagine the medication management experience digitally so we can help folks with their medications, whether they’re our customer or not, and regardless of the number of medications they take.”
In order to automatically import their medication list, PillPack – Medication Reminders prompts users to enter their name, address, date of birth, and the last four digits of their Social Security number. Then, they set reminders and let the app alert them when it’s time to take a pill. The best part is that these reminders are more intuitive to daily habits than the basic functions of an alarm clock. The application also supports gestures, and can work on a wrist for Apple Watch owners.
According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 50% of the U.S. population take at least one prescription drug regularly, and nearly 80% of Americans miss taking their medication, citing forgetfulness as the most common reason, according to a 2015 study performed by Kelton Global.
