Samsung has opened an mHealth lab at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), the Wall Street Journal is reporting. The lab contains a test bed that will study medical sensors and other technologies for health related issues. The company will conduct various trials at the lab, helping push digital health technology forward.
Samsung’s point man on this project is Young Sohn, who is running the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center in Silicon Valley. Michael Blum, a cardiologist who is UCSF’s associate vice chancellor for informatics, says that there has not been enough testing of health-related devices to make doctors feel comfortable with using them. “The reality is, some of this stuff is going to work and some of it isn’t,” he said.
The Korean company doesn’t look into devices that provide a diagnosis and treatment options since those require FDA approval. Instead, Samsung will work on consumer devices to give people the information they need to keep them feeling well…
