RunKeeper 5.0 for iOS adds indoor exercise support

RunKeeper is out with an updated version of its fitness tracking app that adds support for indoor exercise. Version 5.0 is initially available for iPhone users with Android counterpart launching within a week.

The new Stopwatch Mode is used to add indoor fitness to the mix; it’s activated from “Start” -> “Activity Type” where users get to select the activity from the list.

The application will take it from here, automatically tracking how long you’ve been running, and fire off audio cues at the same time you receive them for your outdoor activities. Heart rate will be displayed if you’re using a connected heart rate monitor, and you also get to see your average pace after the exercise.

In its blog post, the company says this is just the beginning with more features coming in the future. In the meantime, they are asking for feedback how this capability could be improved going forward.
