France’s Connected Cycle unveils connected pedal to prevent bike theft

Connected Cycle

French company Connected Cycle unveiled what it says is the first-ever connected pedal at CES to provide a simple solution for regular bike users.

Using built-in sensors, the device can instantly notify bike owner if the bike is moved, and allows it to be located at any time. Similarly, it can locate where the bike was last parked.

Other than making sure a bike doesn’t get lost or stolen, this smart pedal will automatically record the speed, route, incline, and calories burnt of every single bike trip. These statistics are sent to the cloud, and made available through the Connected Cycle mobile app.

The pedal is totally self governing and is able to run all over the world, generating its own energy and using its own Internet connection. There is no need to charge a battery or carry a smartphone during trips. Installation takes less than 2 minutes and doesn’t require any mechanical skills. Nevertheless, it can only be removed using a special coded key that only the bike owner poses. The pedal is elegantly designed with a robust conception with aluminum casing.

The equipment is sold as a package of two pedals, one with the Connected Cycle technology, and a matching pedal for bike aesthetics. No price is available at this time.

UPDATE 2015-04-25: The crowdfunding campaign looking to raise $50,000 is now live on Indiegogo from where you can secure a Connected cycle unit for $129.
