Taking care of the elderly is quickly turning into an industry of its own. Bondgy is one of the companies in this space, and it’s a special startup indeed, created by a 15-year-old Brooke Martin of Spokane, Wash.
The company offers the device called iC LovedOnes, which facilitates two-way video communication with isolated seniors, and can also dispense medications and snacks.
iC LovedOnes will retail for $149.99 starting June 1, involving no monthly service fees whatsoever. The product consists of a control unit and a tablet stand, with users being able to separately buy the tablet they want.
The unit connects to a Wi-Fi network, enabling live video chats with seniors’ families and friends, who can call via a free iOS or Android app, or even a PC.
Family caregivers can load the device with medications and food to dispense at set times to make sure their elderly relatives stay on their regimens and get enough to eat.
The basic mechanics of the device follow the same principle of Martin’s first invention, iCPooch, which handed out treats to dogs when their owners weren’t home.
Martin thought of adapting the device for seniors after watching her grandmother struggle with isolation in an assisted-living facility. “She was unable to pick up the phone or turn on the TV,” Martin said. “It was really difficult for us.”
iC LovedOnes is now available for pre-order through a dedicated website, and for the time being, that’s the only way to get this device. Teaming-up with insurance companies, plans and long-term care facilities is on Bondgy’s agenda, Martin said.
