UK-based Kokoon is raising money for innovative “sleep headphones” at Kickstarter. The project has already managed to surpass its funding goal of $100,000, promising to deliver reliable sleep data first to its own app, and later to other apps aiming to show users the complete picture of their well-being.
Unlike the majority of sleep tracking products that rely on an accelerometer to determine how much a user is moving in his/her sleep, Kokoon uses medical-grade electroencephalographic (EEG) sensors hidden in the band and headphone cups to measure the sleeping brainwaves. The device monitors the electronic impulses in the wearer’s brain to determine the exact moment when sleep comes, the different phases of sleep, and the perfect point in the natural sleep cycle to awaken. Working with a companion app, the headphones then automatically adjust and tune the audio to ensure that regenerative deep sleep is protected from disturbances, and that users wake at just the right time.

Integration with other apps and platforms such as Apple’s HealthKit may come at a later point, but for the time being – Kokoon is focused on improving its own app.
We are also said to expect the “world class audio” thanks to Kokoon’s partnership with Onkyo Corporation and its acoustic engineers, responsible for crafting the “perfect audio” so that these could be great every day headphones, as well.
The device is slated to ship in February next year, and in the meantime everyone can pre-order Kokoon for $189. There’s also the “Light” version which doesn’t include sleep science and data.
