Spotify is entering the fitness space with the newly announced Spotify Running feature, TheVerge is reporting. Relying on the smartphone’s built-in accelerometer, the application will determine user’s running pace and play back songs that precisely match their performance. In addition, the software will look into the listening history and preferences to further personalize the experience.
We’ve combined the best music on the planet — recommendations based on your listening history, multiple-genre playlists and original running compositions written by some of the world’s foremost DJs and composers — all tuned to your tempo and seamlessly transitioned to ensure you’ll never miss a beat. Start running and Spotify will detect your tempo, matching the perfect music in time to your step – making you a harder, better, faster, stronger runner.
The goal is to keep runners motivated through an entire workout, and in that sense Spotify has even decided to compose its own music tracks.
In addition, the company is looking to partner with fitness tracking apps, starting with those offered by Nike and RunKeeper. This will undoubtedly make the service that much more popular, while making its users healthier along the way.
There are also other features coming to the Spotify app, including podcast and video support.
UPDATE: As of September 15, 2015. the feature is available for Android phones, as well — initially it was an iOS only capability.
