Lyft to help NYC seniors get to their medical appointments

It is estimated that around 3.6 million Americans miss or delay medical care because they lack appropriate transportation to their appointments. Lyft is trying to fix this, starting with New York City where they’ve partnered with local National Medtrans Network to fulfill rides to non-emergency medical appointments through its platform.

The partnership aims to make 2,500 rides per week and provide what Lyft says are “dramatic reductions in wait times and missed physician appointments for patients.” They will target seniors, many of whom have regular medical appointments and limited transportation options. Moreover, many of Americans 65 years and older don’t own smartphones, and that’s the reason why National Medtrans Network will use Lyft’s Concierge service that allows partners to request rides for their customers through the Lyft platform.

“Working with Lyft, we’re helping patients live healthier lives by providing reliable, enjoyable rides to their appointments,” Billy McKee, President of National Medtrans Network, said in a statement. “Using transportation-as-a-service like this, the health plans and government agencies we partner with are significantly reducing fraud, saving costs, and improving the patient experience. We provide over 25,000 livery trips per week in NYC, and our goal is to push all of those through Lyft.”

Meanwhile, Lyft’s competitor Uber has been delving in the health industry as well; it has partnered with Practo to help patients reach doctors in India, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore; Solutionreach; MedStar, and Voalte and SMH.
