Withings is already offering a number of different mHealth devices, but smart thermometer isn’t one of them. At CES, they’re changing that with the Wi-Fi-connected temporal artery thermometer called Withings Thermo. Featuring the HotSpot Sensor Technology that consists of 16 independent infrared sensors, Thermo provides one of the fastest, most accurate, non-invasive temperature readings available.
The small device measures the temperature from the temporal artery at the side of head, which according to the press release, is the new gold standard for temperature measurement. With just a point in the direction of the artery, without requiring any motion or scanning, the sensors take 4,000 measurements in 2 seconds while a specially-designed algorithm automatically corrects for biases, such as skin heat loss and the ambient temperature. The hottest point is then determined to ensure the most accurate and reliable single temperature reading.
Withings Thermo will be available during the first quarter of the year for a MSRP of $99.95.Once collected, the readings are sent via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to a connected smartphone or tablet, where a companion app enables users to better control and manage fever episodes for multiple users. Said app also provides contextual information associated with readings, such as logging symptoms or making notes of any administered medicines.
However, Thermo works even without a smartphone, with vibration telling the user when the measurement is complete, and display showing the reading in either Celsius or Fahrenheit, and color-coded feedback glowing Green (normal), Orange (moderated), or Red (for elevated temperature levels).
Withings’ device operates on two AAA size batteries that can last up to 2 years. It is a Class IIa Medical device with appropriate filings for FDA-cleared status in the US and CE Medical Approved status in the EU. In addition, Thermo won two CES Innovation Awards, Best in Fitness, Sport & Biotech; and Tech for a Better World.
The device will be available during the first quarter of the year for a MSRP of $99.95 and will be supported by a dedicated app for both iOS and Android devices.
