Americans are asking AI systems more health questions than ever before. But these conversations happen outside the healthcare system, without access to your actual medical records. That means the advice you get might not fit your specific health situation.
Hartford HealthCare and K Health just launched PatientGPT, an AI system that can securely read your medical records and connect you directly to doctors when needed. The tool works inside Hartford HealthCare’s patient portal and is starting as a beta test with a limited number of patients.
PatientGPT runs 24 hours a day and gives personalized health education based on your medical history. It can also set up virtual visits or in-person appointments with your care team.
How does it work?
PatientGPT uses specialized AI agents that work within the hospital’s secure computer systems. Patients access it through a link in their Hartford HealthCare patient portal. The system can:
- Answer health questions using your medical records
- Connect you to Hartford HealthCare doctors through virtual visits
- Schedule appointments with primary care doctors or specialists
- Ask follow-up questions to better understand your concerns
- Send chat summaries to your doctors before appointments
The system won’t diagnose conditions or prescribe treatments. It’s designed to hand off complex cases to human doctors when needed. Only patients 18 and older in Connecticut can use it right now.
Why does it matter?
Most health AI tools work like dead ends – they give you information but can’t connect you to actual medical care. PatientGPT bridges that gap by linking education with real healthcare access.
For patients, this means getting health guidance that actually relates to their medical history. For doctors, it means patients come to appointments better prepared and routine questions get answered ahead of time.
“So much of healthcare has traditionally been organized around the provider, but it’s clear we have to meet people where they are,” said Jeff Flaks, Hartford HealthCare’s CEO. “PatientGPT supports your health and provides access to a 24/7 care team, while protecting the human relationships at the heart of care.”
The system helps doctors focus more time on diagnosis and decision-making instead of answering basic informational questions.
The context
K Health spent nearly a decade building AI systems that understand medical language – symptoms, medications, and treatment options. The company already partners with major health systems like Cedars-Sinai and Hackensack Meridian Health.
Hartford HealthCare is rolling out PatientGPT carefully, with oversight from licensed doctors and quality monitoring. The system includes built-in safety checks that review responses against clinical guidelines.
“Patients are already using AI to navigate their lives,” said Allon Bloch, K Health’s CEO. “The question isn’t whether AI will shape healthcare, it’s about how we do it in a safe, transparent way, inside a health system that connects to your medical records and your care team.”
Hartford HealthCare serves over 28,000 people daily across Connecticut through more than 500 locations. The health system has received top safety ratings and was the only system in the country to win the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality Prize.
