23andMe partners with HealthEx to merge DNA data with medical records

New AI Health Summary combines genetics, medical history, and lifestyle data for personalized health insights

23andMe

23andMe is taking personalized medicine to the next level by connecting genetic profiles with comprehensive medical records. The DNA testing company has partnered with HealthEx to create an AI-powered Health Summary that analyzes genetics alongside medical history, lab results, and lifestyle data.

This move represents a significant shift in how consumer genetics companies approach health insights. Instead of relying solely on DNA analysis, 23andMe is now incorporating real-world medical data to provide more accurate and actionable health recommendations. The integration makes 23andMe one of the first consumer genetics companies to use the national Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), which standardizes how health information is shared across the US healthcare system.

How the AI Health Summary works

The new Health Summary feature is currently available to participants in 23andMe’s Beta Testing Program, which has attracted over 30,000 members. The system uses artificial intelligence to analyze multiple data sources:

  • Genetic predispositions from DNA testing
  • Medical records and history
  • Blood lab results
  • Lifestyle information

“We are moving toward a world of dynamic disease risk predictions based on an individual’s most current health data,” said Robin Smith, Head of Product at the 23andMe Research Institute. “The goal is to provide better, more personalized insights by bridging the gap between an individual’s DNA and their medical records.”

The AI model identifies health areas that individuals should prioritize and delivers evidence-based recommendations for preventive care. This approach moves beyond static genetic risk assessments to provide real-time health insights that can change as medical data updates.

Streamlined data access through TEFCA

The partnership with HealthEx eliminates many of the friction points that previously made it difficult to combine genetic and medical data. Users no longer need to manually upload medical records or navigate multiple patient portals.

HealthEx provides a web-based consent process that integrates directly into the 23andMe experience. The platform is a federally-recognized Individual Access Services provider under TEFCA, which means it can securely access medical records from participating healthcare systems across the country.

“Genetics reveals your predispositions. Clinical data shows where you stand today,” said Priyanka Agarwal, co-founder and CEO of HealthEx. “23andMe’s AI Health Summary is the first time those two layers have come together in a way that’s seamless, consented, and built for individuals.”

Privacy and data control measures

Given the sensitive nature of combining genetic and medical data, both companies have implemented strict privacy controls:

  • Users maintain full ownership of their data with an “off switch” to stop sharing or delete information at any time
  • HealthEx verifies user identity and requires explicit consent before accessing any medical records
  • All data is protected with enterprise-grade encryption meeting HIPAA standards
  • The integration is designed to be transparent about what data is being accessed and how it’s used
Research implications and broader impact

The partnership also has significant implications for medical research. 23andMe’s research program includes over 11 million consented participants and has collected more than 4 billion phenotypic data points. Adding comprehensive medical records to this dataset could accelerate genetic research and drug discovery.

“The ability to integrate medical records at scale into our research programs holds significant promise to drive new discoveries that can advance our understanding of genetics and human biology,” said Joyce Tung, Vice President of Research at 23andMe.

This development comes as the healthcare industry increasingly focuses on precision medicine – treatments tailored to individual genetic profiles and health histories. By making this type of personalized analysis accessible to consumers, 23andMe is positioning itself at the intersection of consumer genetics and clinical care.

The Health Summary feature represents a broader trend toward multi-modal health data analysis, where companies combine various data sources to provide more comprehensive health insights than any single data type could offer alone.
