More than one in three patients have switched doctors because scheduling was too difficult. That’s the number Zocdoc is betting on as it expands beyond its own platform to become, in effect, a booking layer across the wider internet.
What’s actually changed
Until now, joining Zocdoc meant being discoverable on Zocdoc.com and its app. The company has now extended that single connection to a growing partner network it calls the Care Access Network. Partners already include Amazon Health AI, Gemini, Yelp, Healthgrades, and Blue Shield of California. When Zocdoc adds a new partner, providers already in the network reach those channels automatically, with no additional integration required.
The pricing model is also worth understanding. Any provider can join for free. There’s no booking fee when an existing patient books, or when someone searches for a specific provider by name. Providers only pay a one-time fee when Zocdoc actually connects them with a new patient they wouldn’t otherwise have found.
Why patient search behavior is driving this
A new Zocdoc survey found that 69% of patients searching for a new doctor check multiple platforms before booking. So the problem isn’t just about being listed somewhere. It’s about being findable and bookable at the exact moment and place a patient decides to act. Practices that aren’t present, or that make scheduling difficult, are losing patients to ones that are easier to reach. Forty-three percent of respondents said they’d consider switching to a provider who is simply easier to book.
Tools for practices’ own channels too
Alongside the network expansion, Zocdoc is pushing its Practice Solutions suite, which brings real-time booking directly to providers’ own websites and phone lines. The package includes:
- Branded website scheduling
- Patient communications tools
- Intake and insurance verification
- Zo, an AI phone assistant
