Google Fit Platform officially announced

Google Fit

The earlier rumored Google Fit platform has been officially announced at the Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco. Just like we’ve reported before, it’s designed as a central place to gather fitness data from any number of sources, including apps and wearable devices.

Google Fit wants to provide users with a better overall picture of their performance and health.Companies interested in participating in Google’s scheme will be able to use a set of cross-platform APIs to make their apps and wearables sing along, pouring in data into a single pool which will be accessible to the users. This in turn should provide users with a better overall picture of their performance and health.

Unsurprisingly, companies both small and big are lining up to chip in. Among those committed to Google Fit are Nike, Adidas, ASUS, HTC, Intel, LG, Mio, Motorola, Runtastic, Polar, Basis, RunKeeper, Noom and Withings. The list will likely be expanded in the days to come, though.

The Google Fit platform preview SDK will become available in the coming weeks.
