CellScope unveils Oto HOME to tackle children’s ear infections

CellScope Oto HOME

CellScope announced its very first product for families, the Oto HOME, which is now available for pre-order for $79.

Ear infections are said to be the leading cause of pediatric visits, costing the US healthcare system upwards of $3.5 billion every year. With the onset of cold and flu season, these infections become even more prevalent.

Traditionally, ear infections have required parents to take their child to the doctor’s office for a diagnosis, which can be inconvenient for everyone involved. With Oto Home, CellScope is changing this paradigm.

“We want to bring the doctor into your home,” says co-founder and CEO Erik Douglas. “In the same way that banking has moved from the branch office to the mobile phone, CellScope aims to deliver healthcare wherever you are.”

The Oto HOME can be now purchased in California, with pre-ordered devices starting to ship in late December. The CellScope Oto HOME attachment and app allow anyone to use their smartphone to take a video recording inside the ear and connect with a physician for a remote clinical assessment and prescription, if needed, using the Oto CONNECT service. Initially, the first remote visit will be free with each subsequent visit costing $49.

Right not, the Oto HOME can be purchased in California, with pre-ordered devices starting to ship in late December. Consumers outside California can sign up to be notified when it is available in their state, anticipated in mid-2015.

Aside from the product for home use, CellScope also has a version of its smart otoscope and software for clinicians, the Oto PRO, which is up for pre-order for $299.
