Garmin unveils new smart watches, updated band and Garmin Connect platform

Garmin smart watches

Garmin prepared not but one but few announcements for this year’s CES, including three smart watches, updated Vivofit smart band and revamped Garmin Connect platform. Let’s start with the watches, and take it from there.

Garmin’s new smart watches

Fenix 3

The Fenix 3 is a “smart multi-sport GPS watch” with built-in GPS+GLONASS and an array of integrated sensors like accelerometer, compass, barometer and altimeter, that are able to keep up with a number of different sports. These would include running, biking, swimming, skiing and snowboarding, where every activity gets its own specific measurements. For instance skiers and snowboarders will be able to measure speed, distance and vertical drop; while in the pool, the Fenix 3 will track things like distance, pace and stroke. In addition, serious athletes can get info on recovery time, VO2 max and a lot more.

The Garmin Fenix 3 is made for serious athletes.Another feature of this smart watch is its support for collaborative workouts by sending user’s run data to friends via Garmin Connect. The LiveTrack capability enables Fenix 3 to automatically send updates via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

The Fenix 3 will be available later this quarter in silver with a red band or grey with a black band for $499.99, while the package with wireless heart rate monitor strap will go for $549.99. Additionally, there’s also the premium sapphire model with a stainless band and a domed sapphire lens that will sell for $599.99.

Epix

The Epix is essentially a moving map that shows on the watch’s 1.4-inch touchscreen.Touted by Garmin as a “first-of-its-kind handsfree navigation device,” the Epix is essentially a moving map that shows on the device’s 1.4-inch touchscreen. It comes with a built-in world relief basemap and a one-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery to keep it updated. It has an 8GB of on-board storage, few integrated sensors (digital compass, altimeter and barometer) and a 50m water-resistant body. Additionally, the watch can connect to third party sensors such as a heart rate strap.

The Garmin Epix will be available later this quarter in two variants, costing $549.99 or $599.99; the latter model includes a more detailed topographic map pre-installed.

Vivoactive

Finally, there’s Vivoactive which is the most affordable of the three watches. It too boasts a color display and few integrated sensors. This model will be available later this quarter for $249.99 or $299.99, making it more appealing to the wider audience.

All three Garmin smart watches rock the company’s new app platform called Connect IQ, which initially includes a weather app from AccuWeather and a calendar from Tempo, with additional applications coming in the near future.

Vivofit 2 smart band

Garmin Vivofit 2

Garmin has tapped Jonathan Adler to design a few of the Vivofit 2’s interchangeable bands that are available to the users.Compared to the original Garmin Vivofit smart band, the updated version adds new styles — that should make the device appealing to different tastes — and little else. There’s a backlight and a few other improvements that, fortunately, won’t affect the year-long battery life and always-on display.

To make for an even more attractive offering, Garmin has tapped Jonathan Adler to design a few of the interchangeable bands that are available to the users. What’s more, the company also prepared the special “Style Collection,” which includes more premium options including leather or steel which are either “garish” or “classy.”

New Garmin Connect platform

Aside from new devices, Garmin has also announced revamped version of its online fitness community, Garmin Connect. The updated look, according to Garmin, features improved navigation and a customizable widget-style dashboard, enhanced reports to track performance over time and free training plans that can be sent straight to compatible Garmin devices.

Garmin’s online community is now even more social, allowing users to connect with friends and foes for some friendly competition.Garmin’s online community is now even more social, allowing users to connect with friends and foes for some friendly competition with the new segments and leaderboards feature. Naturally, there’s also the ability to share progress on popular social media sites.

The new Garmin Connect will also help track users’ weight, calories and sleep, making it easier to find and keep healthy habits. Unique to vĂvofit and the new Garmin Connect is a global challenge based on steps per week, language and time zone that users can participate in.

Garmin Connect

The new Garmin Connect will be rolled out in phases during this quarter. The Garmin Connect mobile app will also be updated to reflect the new look and feel of the service.
