Canada’s largest joint replacement launches post-surgery recovery app

SeamlessMD recovery app

The Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre and SeamlessMD have teamed-up to introduce a mobile app that patients can use to self-manage their recovery at home after hip or knee replacement surgery. Part of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The Holland Centre is Canada’s largest joint replacement centre, performing over 2,200 surgeries annually.

Called myHip&Knee, the free app provides patients with timely reminders leading up to surgery, a daily check-in to track their progress (e.g. symptoms, pain levels, joint range of motion), a library of information with exercise videos, and feedback on how to recover safely at home. The Holland Centre will use the data its app gathers to derive insights on how patients recover to help the healthcare team “continuously improve the patient experience.”

The myHip&Knee app provides patients with reminders, a daily check-in, exercise videos, and information on how to recover safely at home.“After conducting focus groups, we learned that many of our patients had access to smartphones and tablets, and wanted to be engaged through mobile applications,” said Deborah Kennedy, Manager of Hip & Knee Program Development at the Holland Centre. “This led our team to pursue this additional partner in care – a mobile app for smartphone and tablet users.”

This isn’t SeamlessMD’s first project in Canada — it has also been working with a Montreal hospital which used a similar (same?) app for enhanced recovery after surgery.

Earlier this month, the company raised $1.1 million in seed money to expand its service.
