Measuring air pollution is a “thing” these days, with Aclima getting most of the attention thanks to its partnership with Google.
Joining the trend is Atmotube, which is touted as the “world’s first truly personal, compact and affordable air pollution monitor.” Like many modern health devices, its creators are also turning to crowdfunding to finance the product launch.
The Atmotube campaign on Indiegogo is looking to raise $52,000, with a single unit going for $99.Atmotube constantly monitors the environment, measuring air pollution and the presence of a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and harmful gases like Carbon Monoxide (CO), temperature and humidity. It then sends an alert when the environment is not safe (via a smartphone app), all while feeding the global database on air quality.
“Every day, we unconsciously take more than 20,000 thousand breaths and don’t even think about most of them,” said Vera Kozyr, co-founder of Atmotube. “Unless we have a problem, we don’t think about WHAT we’re breathing in either, and how what’s in the air might affect our bodies.”
The button on Atmotube can also be set for “Continuous Mode” and the device will take 10 measurements each second. This feature can be very helpful for those trying to find a source of air pollution indoors or outdoors. Users can always access all measurements, an air quality map, and a personal air score from the phone, which will help them make the right choices and live healthier.
