LG Innotek unveils its own bio-sensor module

LG Innotek bio-sensor module

LG Innotek, an LG Corporation subsidiary that makes components and materials, announced the development of an ultra slim optical bio-sensor module for wearable devices and smartphones to measure heart rates, stress indices, and oxygen saturation levels.

The 1mm-thick module, according to the press release, has 20 percent lower power consumption and can measure data with 30 percent higher accuracy than existing products. It provides users with more accurate biometric information with measurement data within an error range of ±2 bpm (beats per minute) and ±5 bpm during exercise. In comparison, existing modules have a range of error while exercising of ±8 bpm.

Made with advanced embedded PCB technology, the bio-sensor includes a Photo Diode (PD), 5 LEDs, and Integrated Circuit(IC). Inside, it is gold-plated to maximize luminance efficiency by minimizing the amount of LED light that is absorbed.

“The core part of IoT (Internet of Things) is the sensor that enables information sharing,” Changhwan Kim, Executive Director of the Components and Materials R&D Center, said in a statement. “We will develop high-tech sensors and use them in automobiles, consumer electronics, wearable devices, and other things to lead the IoT industry.”

No dates were mentioned, but chances are LG will have this module in some devices by year’s end.

The company’s module comes on the heels of Samsung unveiling its own Bio-Sensor, which too is made for mHealth device makers, Sammy’s own products included.
